(BONUS) DISC 7 – NOTES:
In the days before it became the norm to put the same track on both sides of promotional copies of a single, a way to ensure radio jocks played only the intended deck was to have a B-side of no commercial appeal. Utilizing hastily assembled two-minute instrumentals – sometimes comprising studio jams or elements of recycled backing tracks – Phil Spector developed this into a fine art at Philles, frequently namechecking musicians, colleagues and family members in the process. Here are 17 intriguing examples.
“Flip And Nitty”
For the B-side of Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans’ “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,” Spector used “Flip And Nitty,” a sax-led jam titled after himself and arranger Jack “Specs” Nitzsche.
“Walkin’ Along La La La”
Issued as the flipside of the Crystals’ “He’s Sure The Boy I Love,” hardcore Spector buffs will recognize “Walkin’ Along (La La La)” as the backing track of Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans’ “The Walk,” a number first released on the album Rare Masters, Volume 2 in 1976.
“Dr. Kaplan’s Office”
Spector cut a version of the Goffin-King song “You Can’t Sit Still” with Darlene Love and the Blossoms in 1963, but opted not to release it, as was his wont. He did, however, make use of the backing track as the B-side of Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans’ “Why Do Lovers Break Each Other’s Heart?.” The title relates to Dr. Harold Kaplan, Spector’s New York analyst.
“Git’ It”
Featuring Spector himself on guitar, the flipside of the Crystals’ “Da Doo Ron Ron” was “Git’ It,” the sped-up backing track of Darlene Love’s “Take It From Me.” “Da Doo Ron Ron” was based upon an impromptu Arnold Goland piano riff, which might account for his writer credit on the B-side.
“Annette”
Co-penned by Cory Sands, the writing alias of Spector’s sister, Shirley, the semi-instro “Annette” appeared on the reverse of Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans’ “Not Too Young To Get Married.” The title refers to Annette Lee Merar, Spector’s first wife.
“Brother Julius”
The eponymous subject of “Brother Julius,” the wild sax instrumental released as the flipside of the Crystals “Then He Kissed Me,” earned his living shining shoes in the Gold Star car park.
“Tedesco And Pitman”
Turn over the Ronettes’ Philles 45 “Be My Baby” and you’ll find “Tedesco And Pitman,” a cocktail jam titled after guitarists “Teenage” Tommy Tedesco and Bill Pitman, mainstays of the so-called Wrecking Crew.
“Nino And Sonny (Big Trouble)”
“Nino And Sonny (Big Trouble)” was released as the B-side of Darlene Love’s “A Fine, Fine Boy.” “Nino” refers to Spector’s pal Nino Tempo and “Sonny” to Sonny Bono, two more Philles session regulars.
“Miss Joan And Mister Sam”
Another 120 seconds of jazz sax and guitar, “Miss Joan And Mister Sam” turned up as the flipside of “Baby, I Love You” by the Ronettes. “Miss Joan” was Spector’s New York secretary, Joan Berg, while “Mister Sam” is thought to be either Nino Tempo’s father Sam LoTempio or Spector’s uncle Samuel.
“Harry And Milt Meet Hal B”
The title of the rumbling bass-led jam “Harry And Milt Meet Hal B” alludes to Wrecking Crew members Harry Betts, Milton Bernhart and Hal Blaine. The track was released as the B-side of Darlene Love’s 1963 single “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”
“Harry (From W. Va.) And Milt”
Trombonists Harry Betts and Milton Bernhart were again namechecked on “Harry (From W. Va.) And Milt,” a piano-led swinger issued as the flipside of “Little Boy” by the Crystals.
“Big Red”
“Big Red” was the nickname of Spector’s brawny Irish bodyguard/chauffeur, after whom he titled the B-side of the Ronettes’ “(The Best Part Of) Breakin’ Up.”
“Larry L.”
Veronica’s “So Young” was the initial release on Spector’s short-lived Phil Spector label, although it was almost immediately pulled from sale. On the reverse was “Larry L.,” an improvised jazz number titled in honor of renowned recording engineer Larry Levine, who manned the desk for most of Spector’s Gold Star sessions.
“Chubby Danny D”
“Chubby Danny D,” which Spector titled after Philles Records’ promo man Danny Davis, was issued as the flipside of Veronica’s “Why Don’t They Let Us Fall In Love,” the second and final single on the Phil Spector logo.
“Bebe And Susu”
For “Bebe” read Beatrice Bennett, mother of Ronettes’ Ronnie and Estelle, and for “Susu” read Susan Talley, cousin Nedra’s mother, both of whom Spector helped keep sweet by naming the B-side of the Ronettes’ “Do I Love You?” after them.
“Irving (Jaggered Sixteenths)”
“Irving (Jaggered Sixteenths)” was released as the B-side of the Crystals’ final Philles 45 “All Grown Up.” As to after whom it’s titled (Irving Berlin? Mick Jagger?), suggestions on a postcard please.
“Torpedo Rock (Surfing Corrido)”
And finally, a proper instrumental with a proper title, but one Spector chose not to release at the time of its recording,
but let sit on the shelf until its inclusion of the 1976 album Rare Masters, Volume 1.
