De la première performance du trompettiste au Newport Jazz Festival en 1955 (une jam session préparée à la hâte et réunissant Thelonious Monk et Gerry Mulligan tout en précipitant la signature de Miles Davis chez Columbia), à son dernier concert donné en 1975 (au Lincoln Center pendant le Newport Jazz Festival à New York, où Miles interpréta “Mtume”, morceau portant le nom de son percussionniste préféré dans les années 1970), le coffret retrace l’essor de la musique de Miles Davis, du sextet de Kind of Blue (avec Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers et Jimmy Cobb) en passant par second grand quintet en 1966 et 67 (avec Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter et Tony Williams) jusqu’aux wah-wah saturées des années 1970 en compagnie de Pete Cosey, Michael Henderson, Ndugu Leon Chancler et Keith Jarrett.
Chocs : les concerts de Dietikon, en Suisse, pour son sidérant « Funky Tonk » de 25 minutes et la prestation du Berlin Philharmonie en 1973, avec une défenestrante version d' »Ife » et un implacable « Untitled Original » (audio ci-dessous).
