Wattstax, la totale en coffrets vinyle et CD
Le 20 août 1972, l’événement musico-culturel Wattstax, alias le « Woodstock noir », réunit près de 100 000 spectateurs au Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Le concert, organisé par Stax Records sept ans après les tragiques émeutes raciales du quartier de Watts, aligne sept heures de musique prodiguée par les plus prestigieux membres du label légendaire. De la soul, du funk, du gospel, du jazz et du blues avec, entre autres, Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Carla Thomas, The Bar-Kays, Kim Weston, Albert King et Eddie Floyd.
Stax Records et Craft Recordings annoncent la sortie le 24 février prochain d’une série de coffrets saluant le célèbre Wattstax Benefit Concert : Soul’d Out: The Complete Wattstax Collection, Wattstax: The Complete Concert, The Best of Wattstax, et les rééditions double-vinyle de Wattstax: The Living Word et The Living Word: Wattstax 2.
Disponible en édition 12-CDs, le coffret Soul’d Out: The Complete Wattstax Collection propose l’intégralité des performances du L.A. Memorial Coliseum et des concerts plus intimistes du Summit Club, organisés en marge de l’événement. Cette édition contient 31 titres inédits et est accompagnée par un livre de 76-pages préfacé par Al Bell, ancien président de Stax Records et organisateur de Wattstax, et incluant de nouveaux essais de Rob Bowman et A. Scott Galloway.
Wattstax: The Complete Concert restitue l’intégralité du concert du L.A. Memorial Coliseum dans des coffrets 6-CDs ou 10-LPs. En plus des performances musicales, cette édition comprend les discours prononcés sur scène, dont le célèbre “I Am Somebody” du Révérend Jesse Jackson. Ces deux éditions proposent également le livre mentionné plus haut.
Disponible en CD simple, The Best of Wattstax réunit les 20 meilleures performances musicales du concert avec, entre autres, Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, The Bar-Kays, Kim Weston, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Albert King et Eddie Floyd.

Cinquante ans plus tard, ses 40 heures d’images inédites ont été compilées dans Summer of Soul, un documentaire diffusé sur la plateforme en ligne Hulu réalisé par Questlove, le batteur de The Roots et directeur musical de l’émission Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. “Je suis très excité à l’idée de présenter au public la passion, l’histoire et la musique du Harlem Cultural Festival”, déclare ce dernier. “Les performances sont extraordinaires et j’ai été stupéfait en découvrant ces archives pour la première fois. C’est incroyable de visionner après 50 ans une histoire qui n’avait jamais été racontée jusqu’ici.”

Le “Black Woodstock 1969″ bientôt sur les écrans
Au cours de l’été 1969, le Harlem Cultural Festival avait réuni plus de 300 000 spectateurs au Mount Morris Park. Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension, David Ruffin, Mahalia Jackson, the Staple Singers et Gladys Knight and the Pips figuraient à l’affiche de cet événement.
Cinquante ans plus tard, ses 40 heures d’images inédites vont être compilées dans Black Woodstock, un documentaire réalisé par Questlove, le batteur de The Roots et directeur musical de l’émission Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. “Je suis très excité à l’idée de présenter au public la passion, l’histoire et la musique du Harlem Cultural Festival”, déclare ce dernier. “Les performances sont extraordinaires et j’ai été stupéfait en découvrant ces archives pour la première fois. C’est incroyable de visionner après 50 ans une histoire qui n’avait jamais été racontée jusqu’ici et j’ai hâte de la raconter.”

Stax fête ses 60 ans en rééditions, coffrets et vinyles
Concord Music Group et Rhino Entertainment, la division catalogue de Warner Music, viennent d’annoncer une campagne commune célébrant le 60ème anniversaire du célèbre label soul Stax Records. Cette association unique marque la première réunion des enregistrements Stax depuis le retrait d’Atlantic Records en 1967.
Quelques-uns des plus grands titres Stax enregistrés à Soulsville, USA (à Memphis, dans le Tennessee) seront réédités sur de nouvelles compilations de hits, des albums vinyles, des versions digitales haute-définition et des coffrets Deluxe. Ces parutions rendront hommages aux succès intemporels de Stax, mais aussi à des titres plus rares de légendaires artistes du label, dont Otis Redding, Booker T & the MGs, Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Sam & Dave, Albert King, Mable John et The Mad Lads.
Cette collaboration entre Rhino et Concord démarrera le 19 mai avec le lancement de la série Stax Classics et dix anthologies à prix réduit, chacune d’entre elles proposant 12 titres des plus grandes stars du label accompagnés de nouvelles notes de pochette. Disponibles en CD, versions digitales et en streaming, ces albums célèbreront les carrières prolifiques d’Otis Redding, William Bell, Johnnie Taylor, Carla Thomas, Booker T & The MGs, The Dramatics, Albert King, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes et les Staple Singers.
Tout au long de l’année, Concord et Rhino rééditeront plusieurs albums légendaires de Stax en vinyle, dont l’édition 50ème anniversaire King & Queen d’Otis Redding et Carla Thomas (Rhino), la bande-son de Melvin Van Peebles du visionnaire Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (Concord), le rare John Gary Williams du leader des Mad Lads (Concord) et The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, le classique d’Otis Redding paru en 1965 (Rhino).
Les deux labels collaboreront également à un coffret 3-CDs Stax 60ème anniversaire et à un nouveau volume de la célèbre série Complete Stax Singles. Ce quatrième tome se concentrera sur la diversité du catalogue Stax, avec, en plus des singles parus chez Stax et Volt, des titres sortis sur Enterprise, Hip, Chalice et Gospel Truth. Rhino et Concord proposeront également des sorties digitales avec plusieurs titres populaires en haute définition et au format Mastered for iTunes. De nombreux albums seront aussi disponibles en streaming et en versions digitales pour la première fois.
RIP Cleotha Staples (The Staple Singers) 1935-2013
Cleotha, Pops, Mavis et Yvonne Staples
Cleotha Staples, l’aînée des Staple Singers est décédée jeudi dernier à Chicago après avoir longuement combattu la maladie d’Alzheimer. Elle avait 78 ans.
Avec ses sœurs Mavis et Yvonne, son frère Pervis, Cleotha faisait partie du légendaire groupe de gospel The Staple Singers fondé à la fin des années 40′ par le patriarche Roebuck “Pops” Staples à Chicago. Pour les divertir le soir, il leur enseigna les chansons qu’il avait appris dans les fermes du Mississippi.
Signé chez Stax, le groupe enregistra de nombreux hits comme “I’ll Take You There”, “If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me)” ou “Respect Yourself”. Après avoir entendu un discours de Martin Luther King Jr. à Montgomery en 1962, la famille s’engagea activement dans le mouvement des droits civiques et commença a enregistrer des chansons contestataires comme “Freedom Highway” ou la reprise de Bob Dylan “Blowin ‘in the Wind”.
Les Staples Singers ont été introduit au Rock And Roll Hall of Fame en 1999 et ont reçu un Grammy Award pour l’ensemble de leur carrière en 2005. “Yvonne et moi allons continuer à chanter et maintenir l’héritage de “Pops” et de Cleotha en vie” a commenté Mavis Staples qui dédiera son prochain album à sa soeur disparue. R.I.P. Cleotha Staples.
Un documentaire sur les studios de Muscle Shoals
Une nouvelle qui réjouira les soul aficionados : Muscle Shoals, un documentaire de Greg “Freddy” Camalier, retrace l’histoire des mythiques studios FAME et Muscle Shoals Sound Studios situés dans la petite ville d’Alabama. Des lieux de création légendaire où se sont croisés Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Bobby Womack, Etta James, les Staple Singers et les Rolling Stones sous l’égide de Rick Hall et des fameux Swampers, le fondateur et l’implacable section rythmique des studios FAME. Constitué d’images d’archives et interviews d’Aretha Franklin, Rick Hall, Alicia Keys, Mick Jagger et Bono, Muscle Shoals sera présenté cet hiver au festival de Sundance, mais il est temps de découvrir sa bande-annonce ci-dessous !
